Academic Advising

Academic advising is a cooperative effort between the student, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising Center, and the Department of Biology. Professional and faculty advisors assist students in many facets of their academic planning and their progression at UNC Charlotte. However, the student does have the ultimate responsibility of his/her schedule, academic plans, and meeting the degree requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions regarding

(Please also see the "FAQ" link to the right for information regarding general advising for Undergraduate Programs in Biology.)

1. How do I know if I have a hold? and 2. When I can register?

You may check your registration status in 49er Express/Banner Self-Service via the "Check Registration Status" link. Your registration appointment time is determined by the cumulative hours earned and is a specific date/time when registration is first available to you. Registration will continue until the last day to add a course in the spring semester. Details of appointment times can be found on the Office of the Registrar's website.

3. Who is my advisor?

If you are a PBIO (PRE-BIOLOGY) MAJOR, please contact the CLAS Advising Center, 324 Fretwell.

If you are a BIOLOGY MAJOR, you should have an assigned faculty advisor which is listed on your General Student Record in 49er Express/Banner Self-Service.

  1. Log into 49er Express
  2. Click on “Banner Self-Service”
  3. Click on “Student Services/Financial Aid/Student Accounts”
  4. Click on “Student Records”; “General Student Record” is the first link

4. How do I make an appointment with my advisor?

If you are a Pre-Biology Major, to schedule an appointment you must call the CLAS Advising Center or drop by to sign up in person.

If you are a Biology Major, you may sign up for an advising appointment with your assigned faculty advisor. Each advisor may have a slightly different method for scheduling appointments, so you must go to your advisor’s office where further details will be posted on how to schedule an appointment. To find where your advisor’s office is located, click on the “People” menu located on the left hand side of this page.

A few things to remember:

  • You must schedule an appointment at least 24 hours in advance.
  • Faculty advisors are not able to provide advisement over the phone or via email.
  • Faculty advisors will only meet with their assigned advisees.
  • Do not wait until the last minute to make an advising appointment! Schedule your advising appointment well in advance of your registration appointment time.

5. How should I prepare for my pre-registration advising appointment?

Students are expected to come prepared for appointments with their advisor. This includes, but is not limited to, completing the degree check sheet, reviewing the course offerings and a identifying a schedule of courses for the following semester.

Obtain a degree check sheet from the Degree Programs section of this website or from the following links (B.A. in Biology or B.S. in Biology) and complete it by checking off courses that are completed or in progress. Have a list of courses and a schedule for the next semester prepared to review with your advisor. While your biology advisor can provide some information about the general education requirements, he or she will primarily advise you on your biology degree requirements. For further details on general education requirements, please visit the "General Education Requirements" link on the right hand menu of this page.

Please note that you can and should meet with your advisor at times outside of the registration period if you want to discuss academic issues and career goals in more detail.

6. If I do not have an advising hold, do I have to meet with my advisor?

Technically, no, you do not. However, all students should consider meeting with their academic advisor to evaluate their progress in the program and discuss future academic plans. Students who have completed 90 earned hours towards their degree program should absolutely plan on meeting with their academic advisor to prepare for graduation.
